Birthdays Celebrated
On July 15, Tamil Nadu celebrated its Educational Development Day, honoring the birthday of former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj, who was helpful in providing education to poor children. The day also commemorated the 50th birthday of M. Karunanithi, the school coordinator. The two events were hosted by the Deepam Lions Club of Tiruvannamalai.
In the early morning, an abishekam was performed to Lord Srividya Ganapati at the new school site. To mark Karunanithi’s 50th birthday, 51 tree saplings were planted at the new school site. Vengikkal Village Panchayat President Mr. A. K. Kumarasamy planted the first tree saplings and was followed by the students. At 9:30 a.m., students, teachers, Deepam Lions Club Members and parents gathered in a marriage hall near the school. The function began with the Lion’s Club formalities, which was presided over by Lions Club President Mr. V. Manikandan. This was followed by students’s elocution and drawing competitions. In Tamil the recitations were about Kamaraj and in English they were about Karunanithi. The winners received prizes.
Lions Club District Chair Person Mr. P. Indirarajan gave a speech about Kamaraj and Karunanithi. He pointed out the virtues of simplicity and honesty that Kamaraj represented and encouraged the students to follow his example. The students sang a birthday song to Karunanithi and two students also celebrating their birthdays.
Then students, teachers and parents presented Karunanithi with heartfelt gifts. A student cultural program followed. After the closing statements and the singing of the national anthem, everyone ate dinner, which was followed by a film show. The day was filled with enjoyment and learning.
