Professor
Volunteers His Teaching Skills
For two
weeks beginning on August 17, Dr. P. Rama Ramalingam taught English
to students in VI through X standards. During that time, students
learned many things about the education system in the USA compared
to that of India. When conversing with sponsored students, he learned
that many of their parents are illiterate day laborers and that some
of the girl students represent the first generation to receive an
education.
Raised in a village near Tiruvannamalai, Ramalingam graduated
from the University of Madras with a B.E. and received a M.S. and
Ph.D. from a university certified by the American Production and
Inventory Control Society (APICS). In 1970, he became a professor
emeritus of technology and operations at California State Polytechnic
University/Pomona in the United States where he was later named Outstanding
University Professor. In 1982, he became a professor of operations
and management, which required his working with institutions in Canada,
Germany and Japan. Currently, he is president of Global Business
Development Institute (GBDI) and has chaired its international conferences.
During
a school function on August 20, Ramalingam gave an inspiration talk
about self-confidence citing a true story about a village boy, who
lives near Vellore. Even though the boy’s family was
very poor, he succeeded to work for the Indian Administration Service.
After his talk, Ramalingam awarded prizes to the student winners
of the elocution competition. Then, the students presented a cultural
program in his honor. Before leaving, he made a commitment to sponsor
more students and offer his assistance in the school building construction.
Everyone thanked him for his visit and support.
Vinayakar Chadhurthi Celebration in the Free Hostel
On
August 23, Vinayagar Chadhurthi was celebrated in the hostel. On
that day, hostel students together with several teachers gathered
in the hostel and worshiped Lord Ganesha offering Him fruits and
Kottai Kozhukattai (boiled pea nuts and rice flour cookies). After
the teachers and students sang devotional songs, Prasadham of Kottai
Kozhukattai was distributed. Whenever any new work is begun, Lord
Ganesha is worshipped.
Children Offer Their Sympathy
On August 25, teachers,
administrators and students of the school, along with visiting volunteer
Dr. Rama Ramalingan, expressed their condolence to the passing of Dr.
Ram Desai from USA last week. He was a retired political science professor
at Buffalo University in New York. School Correspondent Karunanithi
recollected his visit to the school and his support to the students
sponsorship program. Two minutes of silence were observed with prayers that his
soul would rest on the feet of Arunachala.
